Kalutara Vidyalaya was founded in Kalutara on 6 January 1941 by Sir Cyril De Zoysa. The college was formed as the twin brother of Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya, the girls’ school. On 13 January 1941 the college officially started with 11 teachers and 56 students. After only six months, the college became a senior secondary school. In April 1946, the college began free education and was handed over to the government. In 1998 the college became a National School. The Old Boys Association (OBA) of Kalutara Vidyalaya was established as an alumni body dedicated to fostering lifelong bonds among former students (often called “Kevians”) and to supporting the development of the school. Although the exact founding date of the OBA is less prominently documented than the school itself, the organization has grown into an influential network of alumni both within Sri Lanka and internationally. The OBA plays a key role in organizing alumni events, networking opportunities, and various programs that maintain and enhance the school’s community spirit.
A School Development Society (SDS) in Sri Lanka is a collaborative body comprising school administrators, teachers, parents, alumni, and community members. Its primary role is to support and enhance the educational environment and infrastructure of schools. They often manage and finance extracurricular programs. The operations of SDSs are guided by the School Development Boards Act, which outlines their establishment, functions, and governance structures.
Kalutara Vidyalaya has a proud history of producing distinguished individuals who have excelled in various fields, including sports.
